Healthy gums are the foundation of a beautiful smile

Many people believe that dentistry only focuses on teeth, the reality is that your gums are one of the most important factors in maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile. At Aviva Dentistry, we like to think of the gums as the foundation of your smile – without them everything comes tumbling down!

Gum disease

Healthy gums are firm, pink and keep your teeth securely in place. Unhealthy gums will appear red or swollen and may also bleed when brushing or flossing. This is called gum disease, or gingivitis.

Gum disease can be treated and reversed with a good oral care regime, which includes brushing twice a day, flossing and attending regular dental hygiene appointments. Your hygienist will monitor gum disease to ensure things stabilise and reverse.

Periodontitis

If left untreated, gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth creating a pocket that allows bacteria to enter and build up below the gum line. This is called periodontitis. There are various stages of periodontitis, but symptoms can include bad breath, loose teeth or tooth loss, tender gums, and pain in your mouth. Periodontitis is much harder to treat than gum disease, which is why we advocate regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments as these allow us to spot potential problems.
